World Bicycle Day was celebrated with a mass bicycle ride in Ashgabat with participation of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

Before the start of the bicycle ride, the head of state made a short speech for the ride participants. He recalled that on 12 April 2018, at the 82


plenary meeting of the 72


session, the UN General Assembly passed a relevant resolution that was initiated by Turkmenistan and co-sponsored by 56 UN member-states. The Turkmen leader noted that declaring June 3 as World Bicycle Day was evidence of recognition of Turkmenistan’s initiatives aimed at strengthening peace, friendship and cooperation.

The head of state expressed his gratitude to the world-famous sportsmen for taking part in the bicycle ride in Ashgabat, including the President of the Cycling Federation of Russia, three-time Olympic champion Vyacheslav Yekimov and world champion Sergei Nikitenko.

Gurbanuly Berdimuhamedov also thanked representatives of the Guinness World Records for participating in the action and presenting the Turkmen side with a certificate for holding the largest cycling lesson. Then, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov kick-started the mass bicycle ride and headed the bicycle-cade.

The head of state covered a distance of 8,500 meters along Kopetdag Avenue. Then, he said good-bye to the event participants and departed from the scene, while other cyclists continued bicycling in the streets of Ashgabat. The total length of the ride was 30 kilometers.

Vehicle traffic in the Turkmen capital was restricted from 7 am to 7 pm on this day. Only public and special vehicles were allowed. Events marking World Bicycle Day were held in all regions of Turkmenistan.
