The strategic directions of the Turkmen-Italian partnership are energy and transport, said President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at a meeting in Rome with his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella.
Welcoming the distinguished guest and members of the Turkmen delegation, the Italian President expressed confidence that this visit and negotiations will give new impetus to the development of Turkmen-Italian relations.
– Italy's support for Turkmen initiatives in the field of sustainable energy indicates the proximity of the two countries' approaches to this global problem. In this context, Turkmenistan is considering the possibility of supplying its energy resources in a western direction, together with the European Commission it is working on legal and technical aspects, – Berdimuhamedov said.
“We hope that Italy, as an influential and authoritative member of the European Union, will continue to provide the necessary active support to this process,” – the head of the Turkmen state said.
Ample opportunities for cooperation are also opening up in the field of transport, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted. The geographical location of both countries allows them to play a large role in the development of transport and transit corridors between Asia and Europe through the regions of Central Asia and the Caspian basin to the Black and Mediterranean Seas and the states of Southern Europe.
Thus, strategic interregional and continental systems of economic integration are being formed. Here, Turkmenistan considers Italy as one of the important partners not only in the framework of bilateral relations, but also in the context of cooperation with the European Union, the President said.
The head of state also emphasized that Turkmenistan is ready, together with Italy and the international community, to counter such threats as international terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking and transnational organized crime.
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov invited his Italian counterpart to visit Turkmenistan at any convenient time.
