As part of his working visit to the capital city of Tajikistan, Dushanbe, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov took part in the High-Level International Conference entitled “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028.”

The President of Turkmenistan delivered a speech at the forum in which he outlined Turkmenistan’s position on pressing issues related to ecology and water use in the region and the world.

In his speech, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that the course of development of global processes, prospects for ensuring lasting peace, stability, development and prosperity on the planet largely depend on solving issues related to conservation and efficient use of water resources.

According to the President of Turkmenistan, water related issues that include political, economic and social aspects require an international consensus and consolidated efforts of countries based on the common worldview. The President of Turkmenistan stressed that these issues can be addressed only in close coordination with the United Nations, guided by the Sustainable Development Goals and program documents adopted at the UN Conference “RIO + 20”, the 7

World Water Forum in Daegu and other international meetings.

An unconditional commitment to the principle of equal and equitable access to water resources and its recognition as a fundamental human right should remain a major condition for joint work in this area. The leader of Turkmenistan put forward a proposal on establishment of a specialized UN water structure for this region to address water problems in Central Asia in an efficient manner. As the President of Turkmenistan said, “this is how the international community can effectively use its experience in solving the water and energy related problems.”
