Team Turkmenistan departure for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was celebrated at a ceremony at the Olympic village in Ashgabat. The ceremony of sending the Turkmen sportsmen off to the major sport event that is held every four years was attended by representatives of the State Sports Committee of Turkmenistan, the National Olympic Committee and the Organizing Committee of V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, coaches and top sportsmen of the country.

Team Turkmenistan consists of nine sportsmen, namely Gulbadam Babamuratova, Rushan Nurdzhovov (judo), Arslanbek Achilov (boxing), Hojamuhammed Toychiev, Gulnabat Kadyrova (weightlifting), Amanmyrat Khommadov, Yelena Ryabova (track and field), Merdan Atayev and Daria Semenova (swimming).

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov sent a message to the Turkmen sportsmen participating in the XXXI Olympic Games. In his message, the head of state expressed confidence that Turkmenistan’s sportsmen would demonstrate high level performance and glorify Turkmen sport.
